Twice a year SLPS has an opportunity to do service. This fall brought it around on Saturday, October 5, 2013 at one of the bi-annual psychic fairs called “Fall Wonders” at the Church of the Sacred Circle in West Valley. The large yurt is accommodating to up to ten readers and people at a time. A fire was going in the pit, and a pagan vendor was selling geodes and kambucha on the side. Sergey Khrushchev, Daniel Cureton and April Love worked as readers, donating the money earned to the Church. The fair went from 12-8 and had waves of customers coming in, seeking advice with the cards and oracles, as well as getting their astrological carts read by Heron Herodia, one of the leaders of CSC at whose back yard the yurt sits on.

The time has come to prepare for what lies ahead…. the dark times! Mabon is the time of year when the sun lessens in strength and light and when the night begins to become the ruling phase of our lives.  The God is aging and preparing for his departure at Samhain and the Goddess starts her transition into the Crone phase. The second of the three harvests, the crops that have come in around this time are berries, pears, peaches, and mushrooms. The ritual will be held on Saturday, September 21, 2013 at 6pm in the New American Tradition. SLPS president Daniel Cureton will lead the ritual. The center piece is a commissioned painting acrylic on canvas by the favored artist Kurt Shoopman of Kentucky featuring several skyclad gods dancing around the Mabon fire. Feasting afterward as usual. If you’d like to attend the next sabbat, please come to Witches’ Tea for more info.

The 12th annual Salt Lake Pagan Pride Day was a success! The festival began at 10am on Saturday, September 14, 2013 in Murray Park’s pavilions 1, 2, and 3 and lasted till 6pm. SLPS had a beautiful sacred space set up and offered free tarot readings. The shops Gypsy wagon of American Fork, UT, and The Typsy Gypies of Lehi, UT were the neighbors for the day on either side of the SLPS. booth. The day opened with the morning ritual by the Four Dragons Clann of the 1734 Tradition and people filing in for free readings. As noontime approached, the heavens opened and rain poured down for twenty minutes on everyone. Most of the guests took cover under the canopies and pavilions and watched the bards and belly dancers perform their art. The rained stopped and the people returned. 4pm brought the closing ritual by Harts Hearth Clan of Grantsville. They performed a ceremony to Frey And Freyja in the northern asatru tradition. 6pm was the close and everyone packed up to return home till next year’s pride. Till we meet again!

SLPS had a great time helping the new Utah Valley University Pagan Association get on its feet. President Daniel Cureton read tarot at the club rush on Thursday, September 11, 2013. Sitting with the interfaith section and next to the ROTC, many soldiers came for readings, as well as the regular students at the rush. President Sergey Khrushchev was pleased with the amount of attention the free tarot drew, as it helped get the word out that UVUPA is up and going!

Ms. Hafen became the advertising director on June 24, 2011. She designed beautiful work for most of the sabbats, special events, banners and other occasions. Her work as a mix of photography and hand drawn style. She often incorporated themes of the seasons with suns, moon, stars, and animals. SLPS thanks her and wishes her well in life!

SLPS is very excited to have Sergey Khrushchev come aboard as the new Advertising Director. Sergey Khrushchev was appointed on June 9, 2013 to the position last month after the release of Amber Hafen. He gracefully accepted the office and pledge to serve it to his fullest capacity. “I am so honored and shocked to be asked to do this. I was designing a few things here and there, but never expected to be asked to do be an officer in the society. I’ll do my best!”

Mr. Khrushchev is the artist who designed the banner that was recently used in the Utah Pride Festival March on June 2… also Mr. Khrushchev’s birthday! His work is of a different style than Ms. Hafen’s and often utilizes real imagery and photographs capture from nature and around the world. “I really enjoy the realism he uses in her work and he art is always stunning” said President Daniel Cureton. SLPS wishes him luck in his new office!

Recently, a prospective member came to the society seeking membership. While this person attended meetings and functions, they never formally joined. After a few months, this individual stirred up trouble among some of the more impressionable members, and fooled them into causing a rift in the society. A meeting was held on Friday, May 24, 2013 in the Sugarhouse Park, to discuss the future of the members of the society and work out the issues in a group setting. A special talking stick as purchased for the occasion to ensure that members take turns speaking. Heated opinions, critiques, and passionate feelings were shared. It was decided that the troll would be banned, and several members would be released. Several also chose to leave, leaving the Society fewer in numbers, but also healthier as those who stayed are those who were serious about Work, instead of just socializing.  We wish those who left and were released well in life and that they find other groups in which to participate.

After only a few months as the secretary of SLPS, Rena Fairbrother has decided to step down as the society secretary. Citing personal family issues and schooling, she recently revealed that she will not be able to perform her duties and has asked for her release. She was let go on May 25, 2013.

Rena did perform her duties well while in the office. Staring on February 12, 2013, she was the person who undertook and completed the society’s calendar project giving us the wonderful 2013 calendars with photos and events. She projected new ideas, ways, and projects at the meetings and was an innovative thinker. SLPS will miss her and wishes her well in life and hopes that she will return in the future to be part of the society again.
