SLPS celebrated Midsummer Saturday, June 18, 2016. The members gathered on freshly cut grass, and under the grove of the pines at the temple. The sun was low in the sky, allowing for a cool evening. President Muad’Dib led the ritual in the New American tradition. The Oak and Holly Kings were present, as well as Hern and Perun. SLPS honors the transitioning of the year from the Oak King to the Holly King at Midsummer, as the sun’s zenith is reached and starts to descend to the longest night at Yule.

A dialogue about Midsummer, the path of the sun, and why it’s important to do solar rites took place. Some hand holding and dancing around the altar to the song “Litha” on the album Circle of the Seaons by Lisa Thiel allowed the members to raise energy. Some Midsummer poetry, Sign of the Daisy by Helen Hunt Jackson was read.

Perun, the patriarch of the Slavic pantheon, descended and spoke to everyone present. Perun rules over lightning, thunder, fire, oak, eagle and the ax or hammer. He gave a message of love, acceptance and inclusion, speaking about the forgotten myth, messages, and the simple ways of living like a Slav (bear meat, mushrooms, cabbage, the woods). He said how lonely he gets, with no one to talk with, no one patroning the pantheon like they once did. He encouraged everyone to love each person, work by the sun and moon, to embrace the messages of the ancient kindred, and to live simply as the Slavs did. He blessed them and accepted everyone into his family.  This message was a first, as SLPS welcomed him to the temple as a new God just arrived from the Czech Republic.

The members of SLPS met on Sunday, May 1, 2016 at 3pm to celebrate the union of the Lord and Lady in matrimony and at the Beltane wedding. The Maypole was unwoven from 2014 and set up on the lawn. Flowers from the garden adorned the altar as well as the great rite statue and queer gods painting.

Poetry honoring the Gods was read. The great rite was performed, the uniting of the blade and chalice, by the high priest and high priestess, offering up white zinfandel wine. “Beltane” was played by Lisa Thiel on her album Circle of the Seasons as the members danced and wove the ribbons on 2016’s pole. As the members drank wine and relaxed, two morning doves flew into the trees, issuing calls to the members and giving the sign that the Lord and Lady was present.

The feasting included homemade drunken German Chocolate cake, beef stroganov, and noodles.

Some magic and precision was needed after Thanksgiving. The members of SLPS met under the Full moon Saturday, November 28, 2015 at 8pm to call upon the maiden goddess Artemis, to lend them strength, clarity, and precision to achieve their goals. The full moon is a great time to work powerful rites of any type of magic, especially when they are in need.

Some folks take into account the astrological position of the moon in the signs, the type of seasonal moon, time of day, day of the week and month. All of which can be used to forward and empower the spells performed. This particular moon helped a few members re-empower themselves and ask for clarity to find their goals.

After the ceremony, a friendly game of monopoly was played, with Shy Fox winning with just two sets of property! Watch for those Scorpios, they will win in the end!

SLPS meeting under sacred pine on Monday, September 21, 2015 at 9pm to celebrate the Fall Equinox. The crickets were in unison, the breeze calm as the altar was dedicated and the candles lit. Ganesh and Bast joined the circle of the ancestors and took in the offerings of pears, watermelon, juice and cookies. Mabon being the second harvest, the fruits were pulled from the Society Garden.

The ritual included music by Lisa Thiel, “Mabon” off the album Circle of the Seasons. Spoken word and poetry were performed in honor of the seaons. Bast and Ganesh came down and spoke to the attendees and accepted the food. He will open the way for individuals to succeed in their inner workings. Each person chose a habit to banish in the Mabon fire.

The feast afterwards with the Gods was beef and barely stew with oreo bards for dessert. A bowl was left out for the Gods to enjoy.

SLPS took a slightly different turn for this year’s Imbolc, 2015. No formal ritual or rite was performed on Saturday, January 31, 2015, but a basic toast to the Goddess Brigid took place with drum sticks and chicken breasts being lifted into the air. After a busy week leading up to the event, it was decided to take an easy approach and honor Brigid in with a feast. Sometimes, no ritual is the best ritual!

Sometimes you just go easy! Imoblc 2015 was spent hailing Brigid with Popeyes spicy chicken and red beans and rice. Saturday, January 31, 2015, Salt Lake City, UT

SLPS had a wonderful time participating in the Annual Interfaith Season as part of the Salt Lake Interfaith Roundtable. SLPS hosted an educational New Moon Ritual to Artemis, around the January new moon, at Dancing Cranes Imports Friday, January 16, 2015 from 5-7pm. 25 people showed to learn more about Wicca, Paganism and the Goddess Artemis. The ceremony included a drum circle and fire meditation. President Muad’ Dib and Woman Between the Wolves explained the items on the altar and answered questions about differences between Paganism and non Pagan traditions.

One question that came up right away was “What’s the difference between Wicca an Paganism?” President Muad’Dib commented “They’re the same thing. Paganism is the umbrella term for anything non Abrahamic.” He also discussed queerness in Paganism,  “We had a small discussion about why so many folks who are queer seem to be attracted to it. I stated that because it’s usually very accepting and how personal Pagan paths are is the big appeal. People want to do their own spirituality.”

The origins of Western Occultism were introduced by Woman Between the Wolves, “The foundation of a lot of the symbology of Neopaganism is in the Jewish mysteries of the Qabalah, the Tree of Life. It underlines much of the meanings for things like why the number 3 is a sacred number, the four quarters and their elemental associations, and the practice of ritualized, structured magic.”

After the questions, the drumming and guided meditation took place. The smokeless fire was used as a focus point while the beat of the drum and shaking of percussion instruments help people transcend. Everyone shared cookies and apple juice after offerings were given to the Goddess. Artemis blessed everyone present.
