SLPS meeting under sacred pine on Monday, September 21, 2015 at 9pm to celebrate the Fall Equinox. The crickets were in unison, the breeze calm as the altar was dedicated and the candles lit. Ganesh and Bast joined the circle of the ancestors and took in the offerings of pears, watermelon, juice and cookies. Mabon being the second harvest, the fruits were pulled from the Society Garden.

The ritual included music by Lisa Thiel, “Mabon” off the album Circle of the Seasons. Spoken word and poetry were performed in honor of the seaons. Bast and Ganesh came down and spoke to the attendees and accepted the food. He will open the way for individuals to succeed in their inner workings. Each person chose a habit to banish in the Mabon fire.

The feast afterwards with the Gods was beef and barely stew with oreo bards for dessert. A bowl was left out for the Gods to enjoy.

The Wheel turned and Mabon came upon us. The members of SLPS gathered to celebrate the Fall Equinox on Saturday, September 20, 2014, known as Mabon and Alban Eiler, to honor the Gods, Goddess, and the coming Dark Times, when we all turn inward and study the self, inside mysteries and take time alone as the God dies.

The altar was beautifully decorated with the fruits of the season: peaches, plums, apples and flowers. A seasonal table cloth my by Trustee April Love and a Fall Queer God painting by Kurt Shoopman of Kentucky adorned the table. Lanterns hung in the trees gave an extra witchy and magical feel to the temple area. The new brooms gave the perfect backdrop to the altar.

The Goddess present was Bast, Cat God of Egypt, one who walks between worlds, and Cernunnos, Celtic Lord of Light and Dark.  The ritual included a lighting of the lamp, signaling the light within during the dark, and a Ganesh birthday celebration. Shortbread cookies with jam were offered Ganesh and the song “Ganesh (Sound the Horn)” by MC Yogi on his album Elephant Power was played in his honor.

Craft nights are exciting and bring magic to the world! This Mabon, 2014 the activity was broom or besom making. A good Friday activity, September 19, and easy enough skill, it doesn’t take much to make up a nice besom for ritual, cleansing, and protecting the home. A traditional tool of witches and even some Gods, like Ganesh, the witch’s besom is used to energetically clean an area by sweeping the astral energies out of the room. Most brooms are not built by witches to endure the physical act of sweeping, but are swept slightly off the floor. You can also lean them against a door post or hang about a door frame to protect your home.

Thanks to some pruning last fall, 2013, President Muad’Dib had a supply of staff wood to choose from. Ultimately cherry was the wood of choice. Grass from the garden was magically harvested and used for the bristles. Yarn was use to tie the bundles and secure it to the staff. After only an hour or so, *Boom* there’s a new broom!

Saturday, September 21, 2013 brought the Fall Equinox known and Alban Elued or Mabon. After a bit of an unorthodox start, the ritual got rolling at 10pm (instead of the usual 6).  The ritual kicked off with the usual cleansing and spheres of protection. President Muad’Dib performed the druid opening rites and led everyone into the celebration of light and dark. The Hermit came knocking to the temple doors  holding the light of life. He spoke to everyone, announcing himself as the guide of souls before passing his lantern to Ra who said his goodbyes from the light time of year and finally onto Cernunnos who takes over at this time. Cernunnos spoke of his support and love for each person, how they should not be afraid to push forward into the dark times and look into the soul. He blessed everyone and promised to walk the journey with them.

Mabon magic was worked with everyone burning away a problem in their lives in the Cauldron Awen. Esus danced in the circle as part of the druid rite of Alban Elued performed by president Muad’Dib. Ganesh stopped by as part of the Chaturthi celebrations to have a piece of pie and hear the Mabon poetry read, and with that, the ritual closed till next fall and the feasting of ribs and pickled mushrooms began. A heathen symbol performed with the traditional drinking horned being passed as cheers to the deities went up into the air late into the night.
