SLPS did it’s duty, serving the community. Twice a year rolls around the bi-annual fund raiser for the Church of the Sacred Circle. This time called “Spring Fling”, SLPS read the tarot for about 20 people on Saturday, April 13, 2013. Muad’Dib, Piggy, and Lunar Oak Spirit showed up in time to read the cards, get some new stones from the vendors, and sit by the fire in the new Church of the Sacred Circle fire pit. SLPS enjoys giving time and service to COSC, a close friend of the society!

Thanks to everyone whom participated, donated, and helped make the clothing donation drive a success. The official donation period ended on March 21, 2013. We had a staggering 353 items to donate to Big Brother Big Sister of Utah! President Daniel Cureton and April Love processed the items over a two and a half hour period from grocery bags, trash bags, boxes and paper sacks. The final count is 353 with all of it being packed into 18 white plastic bags. Great job for the dedication and service you are all giving to the community! You can read the letter that has all the details of the items and which will accompany the items to their new home.

It’s time to serve… the community that is! This semesters we are doing a clothing donation drive for the Big Brothers and Big Sisters of Utah. Bring all your clothes to President Daniel Cureton’s house by Monday March 18 2013 at 8pm. The truck will pick them up on Tuesday March 19 at 8am. He’ll take an inventory and get a receipt for the records. The clothes should be spring/summer if possible. Thanks ahead of time for all your donations!

No Sunday Meeting September 4 2011 On Labor Day Weekend
Posted in Other, Volunteering, tagged Sunday meeting on September 4, 2011| Leave a Comment »
Due to the Holiday of Labor day, the Beehive Tea Room will be closed, so UUPS will have no meeting. Plan on meeting later in the week to plan for Pagan Pride Day this upcoming Saturday, September 10!! Maybe Wednesday, Thursday Night. We need at least four people to man the table at the festival so we can all have turns instead of being glued to our seats all day. I’ll send out an email update for our Pagan Pride Planing meeting. See you all then!

Prison Pen Pal Writing Spring 2011 Serivce Project

This spring term on April 21, 2011, a different kind of service project was undertaken. Prison pen pals was on the list for the members of UUPS this past April. A few people asked about why such a project was undertaken, to write to prisoners, to which President Daniel Cureton replied “We believe firmly in outreaching to all people, free or not free. It’s not our place to judge who they are or what they’ve done just because they’re in a jail cell. They’re a people, they are human beings, and deserve light and love not matter their circumstance.”
Initially there were some who had concerns about the project but after President Cureton explained the motives, all took up the pen to write, “We weren’t asking everyone to put their home address on the letters! They had the choice to put the University mailing address we have or none at all. Our chief concern was making sure every person will receive a nice, uplifting letter to brighten their day. We wrote to people inside and out of Utah, Pagan, Christian, straight and gay.”

This December 1st 2010 brought UUPS the opportunity to work closely with the University of Utah LGBTQ Resource center to give time to the World Aids Day. UUPS spent two hours tabling in the student union passing out information. We are proud to be allies with our LGBTQ friends and family members! Although not enough hours, its a start to a working relationship for future volunteering opportunities with the LGBTQ Resource Center and other groups and organizations under the LGBTQ/AIDS Banner.

This July brought us the opportunity to build a community connection with Hawk Watch International of Salt Lake City. They are a predator monitoring organization. We went over and cleaned their water tanks for several hours on Saturday, July 10, 2010. Volunteering is an important part what we believe as a community and student group. We hope to see you all there at the next volunteering event!
