Thanks to everyone who came to Midsummer 2014, held on Saturday, June 21, 2014, the Summer Solstice. It was performed in the New American Tradition by President Daniel Cureton. A special Midsummer Kings painting, acrylic on canvas, was the center piece, with two acrylic on board paintings of the Holly and Oak Kings to the sides, all done by Kurt Shoopman of Glasgow, Kentucky. Other items included flowers, cinnamon rolls, God’s eyes, ritual wine and a custom sunflower table cloth made last Midsummer by April Love.  The faeries visited, the Holly King dominated the Oak King as the new ruling king of the year till Winter Solstice, and mighty Midsummer magic was worked at the Midsummer fire. Feasting included steak, vegetables in butter sauce and home  made cinnamon rolls.

The Gods are Happy! Everyone was blessed at Beltane this year, held on Saturday, May 3, 2014 at 6pm.

The ritual opened with the usual banishings and circle protections and elemental callings. The altar was decorated in Beltane colors and Celtic Knotwork, symbolizing the eternal nature of the Gods and everyonekinds connection to them. A special commissioned painting by Kurth Shoopman of Kentucky of Ganesh and Pan in the great rite was the centerpiece, symbolizing the Queer nature of divinity and everyonekind.

With drumming and music, the wedding party entered the circle. The God was played by Sergey Khrushchev and the Goddess was played by April Love. The declarations of unity, blessings and love was followed by the great rite, with the blade entering the chalice, symbolizing the unity of the Goddess and God to each other as well as to everyonekind.  With the throwing of rice and the reading of Beltane poetry, president Cureton performed a druid rite to Niwalen.  The dancing of the sacred dance around the newly made May Day Pole was next. After some confusion, the pace picked up and the weaving of a tight knotwork took place, to ensure the blessings and desires of everyone who dance till next Beltane.

The feastings included wine, spirits, ribs, steak, greens beans and mushrooms, scalloped potatoes, yellow rice and curry chicken, and three bean salad. Check out the photos below!

Ostara shining face was seen this past Ostara 2014. SLPS held Ostara 2014 on Saturday, March 22, 2014 at 6pm. The ritual was done in the New American Tradition by SLPS president Daniel Cureton.

With the opening of the ceremony by the LBRP and other rites, the ritual quickly moved to the story of Ostara or Easter. Centering around the Goddess Eostre and her blessing of the bunnies to spread her name, a guided journey to meet the Goddess was performed. Afterward, wildflower seeds were spread in a barren patch of land, to bring new life as spring rolls forward. President Cureton performed a druid rite of spring to Coel. The cakes and ales included bunny bread rolls made by Rhiannon Watters that were offered up to the Goddess in thanks for the return of Spring, with the song “The Earth is Our Mother” by Libana being chanted in remembrance of our ties and duty to care for the land. The ritual ended peacefully with spring poetry.

The feastings included vegan lentil soup, potato rolls, grilled chicken, spinach and cucumber salad, and enchiladas. With the wine and juice flowing freely, the feastings continued into the night and ended with a few hands of five card poker!

Thanks to everyone who came and participated in the Imbolc ceremony on Saturday, February 1, 2014 at Dancing Cranes Imports at 6pm. SLPS helped kick off the 2014 Interfaith Month with Imbolc. Lakshmi stood in since Brigid arrived late. The table was decorated with a handmade table cloth by April Love in the late winter seasonal design. Flowers, cookies, sparkling apple cider, candles and more all decorated the altar. Since the ritual was squeezed into the small time space of an hour, some creative editing was necessary.

After reading Imbolc poetry, there was singing and dancing, cleansing and blessing, all before Brigid appeared. She stepped in for a visit through one of the mediums and gave spiritual advice to everyone through the tarot. Afterwards, everyone came forward to received blessings from her through sacred fire.

The energy was sent out into the universe at the close and the rest was returned to the living Earth.

For all those who don’t know, SLPS will be hosting a public ritual, the first sabbat of the year, on Saturday, February 1, 2014 at 6pm at Dancing Cranes Imports located at 673 E Simpson Ave (2240 S.), Salt Lake City, UT 84106. Dancing Cranes is accessible on public transit on the 700 E S-line stop on the Sugar House Street Car Trolley. This celebration will welcome back the light of the sun and bring an end to the dark times of the year. Known as Candlemas to Catholics, this is the time of year when the Lady takes over from the Lord and is honored in the form of the Celtic Goddess Brigid (Saint Brigid) at Imbolc. Brigid is over poetry and blacksmithing, and will be visiting the attendees to give them guidance for the upcoming spring season. Join in if you can, it’s free! You can find the ritual outline in the rituals section of our website. If you’re on Facebook, RSVP on the event page on the Salt Lake Pagan Society’s Facebook page.

Thanks to all who came and made the Yule Ritual and Feast a brilliant success. On Saturday, December 21, 2013, a few members and guests of SLPS gathered and welcomed back the Yule King from the world of the ancestors. Lauren Holman playing the Goddess gave birth to Sergey Khrushchev as Cernunnos. All knelt and honored the returned Lord. This time of year is when the sun begins his ascent and starts to increase in light, and when the Oak King reigns again till Midsummer. President Daniel Cureton performed a druid rite for Yule and after a beautiful poetry reading, gave the cakes and wine offerings to the Oak King and Goddess and asked blessing for the new year as the light returns.

The feasting included rotisserie chicken, green beans and quinoa, potato salad and fruitcake. Check out the photos below!

Thanks to who came to the Samhain ritual and feast on Saturday, October 26, 2013 at 6pm. The society began the Samhain by painting pumpkins and rocks for the dead. The rocks were later buried under a tree and the pumpkins put out on display. The crowning piece of this year’s Samhain was a hand painted skull for dia de Los Muertos as the center piece. The ritual was performed in the druid/wiccan style by SLPS president Daniel Cureton.

The main rite of the Samhain ritual was Lord Shiva, Hindu God of Death, unlocking the gate of the underworld in Nataraja pose to allow the spirits of the dead to attend their living. After a few moments, they were sent back to the underworld till the next ancestral working. Cernunnos had gone before to prepare the dead for the visitation as it was he who died that day, to be reborn again at Yule. Cerridwen of the druids was seen during the druid Samhain rite. The offerings were home made pumpkin bread and Bloody Mary’s in the frog cauldron. Medusa burned away all the worries and problems of the people (played by Lauren Holman). It came to a close with the blessings of Samhain being given by Lady Hecate.

The feasting included home made pumpkin bread, green beans, buckwheat and mummy chicken (wrapped in bacon). After the feast, everyone rested by a Samhain fire, lit for the ancestors and enjoyed eggnog and brandy.  Check out the photos below!

Saturday, September 21, 2013 brought the Fall Equinox known and Alban Elued or Mabon. After a bit of an unorthodox start, the ritual got rolling at 10pm (instead of the usual 6).  The ritual kicked off with the usual cleansing and spheres of protection. President Daniel Cureton performed the druid opening rites and led everyone into the celebration of light and dark. The Hermit came knocking to the temple doors  holding the light of life. He spoke to everyone, announcing himself as the guide of souls before passing his lantern to Ra who said his goodbyes from the light time of year and finally onto Cernunnos who takes over at this time. Cernunnos spoke of his support and love for each person, how they should not be afraid to push forward into the dark times and look into the soul. He blessed everyone and promised to walk the journey with them.

Mabon magic was worked with everyone burning away a problem in their lives in the Cauldron Awen. Esus danced in the circle as part of the druid rite of Alban Elued performed by president Cureton Ganesh stopped by as part of the Chaturthi celebrations to have a piece of pie and hear the Mabon poetry read, and with that, the ritual closed till next fall and the feasting of ribs and pickled mushrooms began. A heathen sumbol performed with the traditional drinking horned being passed as cheers to the deities went up into the air late into the night.

The time has come to prepare for what lies ahead…. the dark times! Mabon is the time of year when the sun lessens in strength and light and when the night begins to become the ruling phase of our lives.  The God is aging and preparing for his departure at Samhain and the Goddess starts her transition into the Crone phase. The second of the three harvests, the crops that have come in around this time are berries, pears, peaches, and mushrooms. The ritual will be held on Saturday, September 21, 2013 at 6pm in the New American Tradition. SLPS president Daniel Cureton will lead the ritual. The center piece is a commissioned painting acrylic on canvas by the favored artist Kurt Shoopman of Kentucky featuring several skyclad gods dancing around the Mabon fire. Feasting afterward as usual. If you’d like to attend the next sabbat, please come to Witches’ Tea for more info.
