Superbowl Sunday Imbolc 2017

The members of SLPS gathered to celebrate the Superbowl and do kitchen magic to Brigid by making homemade food on Sunday, February 5, 2017. Pineapple and pepperoni pizza, baked brie, and bbq buffalo chicken wings. The members enjoyed good food, games, and the big game for Superbowl LI on tv while honoring the Celtic Goddess Brigid.

Yule 2016 Ritual and Feast

The society met to honor the return of the Yule King, born again the longest night, and to give thanks for the blessings of 2016. The Oak King now reigns till Midsummer. A special snow covered pine tree adorned the altar. The members sang “Yule” by Lisa Thiel on her album Circle of the Seasons and prayed to the Celtic God Cernunnos. The offering was a home made chocolate raspberry yule log cake.

Samhain 2016-Veles Opened the Door

SLPS celebrated Samhain Saturday, October 29, 2016 at the Temple of the Sun and Moon. The altar was set with Samhain decorations. Pumpkins from the garden gave the right touch of the season, the final harvest, to the altar of life and death.
Veles, the Slavic god of the underworld was invoked as the primary deity. Sitting between spinal column candles, representative of the dead, Veles opened the door and allowed the beloved Kin to visit as the members sang along to “Samhain” from the album Cycle of the Seasons by Lisa Thiel. Bloody Mary’s and maple cookies were offered, in symbol of the body and blood of sacrifice and gratitude.
the feasts included apple pear salad, tri tip steak, and potatoes au gratin.

Mabon 2016-Cernunnos’ Blessing!

SLPS celebrated Mabon in Big Cottonwood Canyon Saturday, September 24, 2016, under the shade of an oak and the watchful eyes of the land spirits and ancestors of the mountains. Cernunnos was honored with wine, acorns, lavender sage, and apples. Poetry was read, and the members listened to “Mabon” from the album Cycle of the Seasons by Lisa Thiel. The setting sun created a magical atmosphere in which Cernunnos emerged from the forest to bless those present. Natural oak wands added the right touch to the fall season.
The after Mabon feast was tacos at El Farol restaurant in Midvale. Egyptian tarot readings gave everyone guidance for the dark times ahead.

Salt Lake City 15th Annual Pagan Pride Day-Healing in the Community

The 15th Annual Salt Lake City Pagan Pride Day took place on Saturday, September 17, 2016 at Liberty Park in downtown Salt Lake City. Over 30 vendors came to celebrate Pagan pride, build community, share goods, services, and fellowship.
The change in venue was a necessary step in the progression, health, and building of Pagan pride. Returning it to Salt Lake City limits allowed for more access, more people to stroll through, and provided the opportunity to build awareness of Paganism. Traffic came from all over the park, as passers by, people who lived near Liberty, and overflow from the 9th and 9th Street Fair happening at the same time.
The opening ritual was performed by Crone’s Hollow, who chanted and welcomed the first timers into the community, encircling them and encouraging the old Pagans to give hugs and handshakes to the new people. Music was heard and dancers performed continually throughout the day, with a mix of country and rock. Bands like Ceol Realm and Maiden Voyage with Bellydancing by Thia and Shadow of the Moon. Several workshops took place, with president Cureton teaching a workshop on creating Pagan archives.
SLPS had a booth next to Hart’s Heart Clan of Grantsville, a Norse clan. SLPS decorated the booth with Chinese lanterns, coffee, mooncakes, and an altar was set up to Fu, the Chinese folk deity of success, to honor the Harvest Moon that happened on Friday, September 16. Fu did indeed bring the money and success, with many clients coming to the tent for $5 readings. One student of SLCC even interviewed president Cureton for a diversity project about religions in Salt Lake.
The closing rite was performed by Hart’s Hearth Clan who honored Freyja and Freyr, blessing the people with apple juice and a pine bow. Everyone left the festival feeling relieved, happy, and excited. The energy of the day was uplifting, positive, and rooted in togetherness. There was a sense of healing, that the festival provided the community a step in the right direction to heal old wounds and to move forward in fellowship. Many old Pagans commented on the change, and how everyone left with smiles. All the vendors were happy with the success of the day, committing to returning next year.
The new steering committee and leadership of Pagan Pride wanted to be more inclusive, so they invited non Pagan vendors such as the Utah Chapter of the Horror Writers Association to connect Pagans to resources and opportunities in the community. UCHWA helps writers write, edit, and has publishing opportunities. They were very happy, “We loved it, we sold many books and all of the 2nd anthology we published last year that we brought we us. Many folks are interested in joining. We’ll be back next year!” Commented Cody Langille.

SLPS met under cool sky, warm earth, and to the sounds of crickets in the late July evening to celebrate Lughnasadh, the first harvest, and honor the Celtic God Lugh on Saturday, July 30, 2016. The altar was set, adorned with seasonal items, cock candles, corn, nude Lugh painting, and flowers. The fruits of the first harvest, the Society garden, were presented before the Gods. The harvest included: baquieu and romaine lettuce; onions; shallots; shishito, serrano, and anaheim peppers; okra, yellow squash; parsley, oregano, and dill herbs. Four types of jam from the fruit trees that have produced from the garden: apricot mango, apricot oregon grape, apricot plum, and plum (plums from the red plum trees on the curb). The Society is greatly blessed to have such harvests from the Good Earth Mother, Gaia. All the hard work of the garden has paid off!
Homemade cornmeal buttercream cupcakes were made by member Stesah Bowden. Wyld Extra Pale Ale and Moab Brewery Dead Horse Amber were the drinks of choice for John Barleycorn, who is burned as an offering from the wheat/corn to the gods at this time. Without the god Lugh, Lughnasadh is celebrated at Lammas, as a holiday of thanksgiving surrounding the first of three harvests that happen in August, September, and October.
The members meditated to the song “Lammas” on the album Circle of the Seasons by Lisa Thiel. The members went around afterwards in a circle and offered up thanks for all the things the were grateful for in life, lending that energy to the overall gratitude of the harvests.
The feasts including sauteed yellow squash with bacon, onions, and shallots (a traditional Gullah/Charleston, SC recipe by Daniel Cureton who hails from that part of the world), BBQ-ed ribs, and chicken mole enchiladas.
