SLPS gathered on Sunday, August 21, 2016 to pickle prolific peppers picked perkily. A great full moon activity, which is known as the sturgeon moon in August when sturgeon’s were most easy to catch during the moon. The society garden has been producing many peppers with jalapeno, shishito, anaheim, and serrano being the more abundant. Thai, tabasco, habanero, and ghost peppers have yet to yield.

A whole bucket was picked, with onions, garlic, green tomatoes, and tomatillos from the garden being added to the mixture, which contained the jalapeno, shishito, anaheim, and serranos. Honey and water were used to dilute the mixture and give it a slightly sweeter taste. 22 pints were produced, close to 3 gallons of pickled peppers!

SLPS met under cool sky, warm earth, and to the sounds of crickets in the late July evening to celebrate Lughnasadh, the first harvest, and honor the Celtic God Lugh on Saturday, July 30, 2016. The altar was set, adorned with seasonal items, cock candles, corn, nude Lugh painting, and flowers. The fruits of the first harvest, the Society garden, were presented before the Gods. The harvest included: baquieu and romaine lettuce; onions; shallots;  shishito, serrano, and anaheim peppers; okra, yellow squash; parsley, oregano, and dill herbs. Four types of jam from the fruit trees that have produced from the garden: apricot mango, apricot oregon grape, apricot plum, and plum (plums from the red plum trees on the curb). The Society is greatly blessed to have such harvests from the Good Earth Mother, Gaia. All the hard work of the garden has paid off!

Homemade cornmeal buttercream cupcakes were made by member Stesah Bowden. Wyld Extra Pale Ale and Moab Brewery Dead Horse Amber were the drinks of choice for John Barleycorn, who is burned as an offering from the wheat/corn to the gods at this time. Without the god Lugh, Lughnasadh is celebrated at Lammas, as a holiday of thanksgiving surrounding the first of three harvests that happen in August, September, and October.

The members meditated to the song “Lammas” on the album Circle of the Seasons by Lisa Thiel. The members went around afterwards in a circle and offered up thanks for all the things the were grateful for in life, lending that energy to the overall gratitude of the harvests.

The feasts including sauteed yellow squash with bacon, onions, and shallots (a traditional Gullah/Charleston, SC recipe by Daniel Cureton who hails from that part of the world), BBQ-ed ribs, and chicken mole enchiladas.

The members of SLPS met on Saturday, May 21-Monday, May 23, 2016 to plant the second Society garden over the full moon. The ground was weeded, turned, and manure was added. This year the garden doubled in size, so more work was to be done and more time given to the Earth. Thankfully the rain softened the sand and only the crab grass fought back. Monday evening, after all the hard work, the starter plants from Millcreek and Traces gardens were planted under the light of the moon.

This year the society planted: corn, okra, Japanese eggplant, red watermelon; Jack-o-lantern, Jack-be-little, and Jarrahdale pumpkins; artichoke, shallots, Walla Walla sweet yellow onion, baquieu and butter lettuce, cabbage, yellow summer squash; De Milpa, Verde, and Yellow Husk tomatillo; dill and basil; Granny Green, Zebra, and Brandywine tomatoes; Armenian cucumbers; Giant Marconi, Habanero, Tobasco, Anaheim, Anaheim Chili, Serrano, Chipotle, Pimento, Ghost, Lemon Drop, Anchio, Caribbean, Shishito, and Keystone Giant peppers. The total cost this year being $300 for the plants and supplies.

Some good insects were spotted, a few spiders egg sacks and one jumping spider. Earth worms and roly polies were plenty. A few June bug larve and lacewing flies were seen. A test of the soil revealed that the sandy earth is a neutral, neither acidic or alkaline, perfect for all types of plants!

Blessed Be the Good Earth Mother and all her fertile soil. The new society garden has been planted and blessed this past week of May 24-31, 2015. Daniel Cureton, Ashton Longhurst, April Love, and Gwen Allen with the house dog Freyja worked hard over the last week to weed, turn the soil for roots, add manure, plant the crop and water the garden. “It was back breaking work. Most of it was the weeding with hoes and turning the soil with the cultivating forks, that took the whole week.” Said Ashton Longhurst. Gwen Allen commented “my African blood was pumping strong. We were out there working like slaves! Real strong, I was feelin akin to the brothas and sistas from home in the Deep South workin the plantations”

The planting on Sunday morning went quickly and easily after the hard work was done. It was done over night and in the early morning hours so that the society members wouldn’t be bothered by the bees. All included are: bell, Anaheim, Tabasco and jalapeno peppers, tomatoes, tomatillo, corn, oregano, cilantro, parsley, butternut squash, yellow squash, cucumbers, Georgia collard greens, cantaloupe, watermelon, a blue berry bush and a grape vine. President Daniel Cureton gave a druid blessings on the land “May the fire of life Nwyfre come up at this point and give life and fertility to everything present.”
