The 14th annual LGBT Gay-la and Silent Auction was held on October 2, 2014 at  6pm at the Wagner Jewish Community Center at the University of Utah. SLPS donated a $75 Tarot gift certificate as part of the auction which sold for $10. We here at SLPS are glad to help the Silent Auction as the money raised from both events goes to the scholarship and emergency fund. Each year several students receive approximately $2,000 each in scholarships from the LGBT Resource Center. The reserve one time emergency fund is avaliabe to students in exceptional financial need and difficulty and is approximate $500 each. SLPS looks forward to donating again at the 2015 Gay-la and Silent Auction.

Thanks to all who came and made the U’s Orientation events a hit! SLPS tabled at Plazafest on Thursday, August 29, 2013 doing free tarot and other readings from 10am-2pm on the west lawn of the Student Union building. UUPS had the great opportunity to table at spring term’s Plaza Fest at the U of U on January 11, 2012. Daniel Cureton and UUPS adviser April Love gave away pamphlets, talked with students and had a general old pagan time while letting others know there is a safe, inclusive environment where all can come who are seeking or interested in alternative earth based spiritualities.

UUPS had a good time giving out information and telling people about the club at the Grand Kerfuffle tabling on the west lawn of the U of U Student Union building on April 22, 2011. President Daniel Cureton and member Sarah Cochran relaxed in the shade as students rushed by to class in the noon sun.

Thanks to everyone for all the hard work accomplished in March! April has been a busy month, but isn’t holding anyone back!

KUTE Radio Interview

On Friday, March 18, 2011, President Daniel Cureton was asked to appear on our very own 1620 AM University radio K-UTE.  President Cureton was asked to explain and talk about the U of U Pagan Society, its goals, what it does, ambitions, history, current projects, membership and he was even invited to give a blessing on the campus!

Here is a little what he said, “The U of  U Pagan Society is a group of students who have reached out to include the community. We currently have seventy members and many monthly activities going on such as crafting classes, classes and rituals.” One of the hosts asked him at that point “What is a ritual?” He explained “A ritual can be a number of things.  For me it means a structured and repetitious ceremony that I can do again and again the same way, or feel free to change it.  For me, I incorporate different parts from different religions like Druidry, Shamanism and Wicca. A ritual for me is a way to connect with deity, ancestors, spirits and the universe.  Really it can be seen as a form of prayer or worship.”

When asked about community and student involvement, President Cureton commented, “We are trying to educate and make everyone aware through experience.  We advertise classes and activities from other groups so that people who are living far away and can’t make it, can know that there are activities going on near them.”

Finally President Cureton gave a simple but elegant blessing over the campus “May there be peace in your heart and success on your midterms this spring break, with lots of relaxing time on vacation.  So mote it be.”

This past month brought us the wonderful opportunity again to see our wonderful brothers and sisters from Utah State University Pagan Alliance in Logan, Ut on Saturday, March 19, 2011. They celebrate and honored Liber Pater with the Roman Spring Holiday Liberalia. Masks were hung in trees, wreaths were worn on the heads and togas worn! Callista Midnyte Dreamwalker (fourth from right) related her experience, “Liberlia was a very powerful experience. It was my first ritual I ever  attended and I was nervous. However when we arrived we were invited into the circle among many fellow pagans. We called upon the God and Goddess not just of the Romans but also of others. I enjoyed the company and felt the Gods and Goddesses presence.  I felt their joy in our gathering. This three hour drive was completely worth it!” Saerra Fairbrother (end right) said “ I am so glad I went. It was a great time and I even met a woman who will be moving to go to SLCC with us in the fall.”

UUPS is very excited and cannot wait to see and join in the next celebration with USUPA! We are grateful to our wonderful friend and President of USUPA Kassie (second from right).

This month we are focusing on getting sponsored by one of the local businesses and setting up for the PRIDE Festival.  We also have added a new event page to the website so everyone can keep up to date on what is going on with UUPS!

This December 1st 2010 brought UUPS the opportunity to work closely with the University of Utah LGBTQ Resource center to give time to the World Aids Day.  UUPS spent two hours tabling in the student union passing out information. We are proud to be allies with our LGBTQ friends and family members!  Although not enough hours, its a start to a working relationship for future volunteering opportunities with the LGBTQ Resource Center and other groups and organizations under the LGBTQ/AIDS Banner.

Hi folks,

Soon under the wing of the Goddess, Hecate’s time will come, Samhain, or Halloween.  As part of the end of October, we will be doing Pagan Awareness Week the last week.  There will be an altar set up at the University of Utah.  Awareness and understanding,  especially at such a commercial time, while peoples guards on witches and pagans has been let down for all the candy they’ll get on this night, is the best time to make the true meaning of this sacred holiday known.  Here is the link to the facebook group so you all can see the events that are upcoming

As part of that week, don’t be afraid to show you’re a god and/or goddess worshiper!  We want to educate the community on the real meaning of paganism, so be proud to sport your alternative clothing or jewelry, even if its for an hour!  This is part of the goal of Pagan Awareness Week, to get the local pagan’s out of fear and out of the broom closet! I hope to see you all there!

President Daniel Cureton got the first booth for UUPS at the U of U Welcome Week August 26, 2010. Set up on the Student Union west lawn and thankfully in the shade, the sun rose in the August sky and students passed by. Plenty of Pagan literature was on the table for those interested in Paganism. The new club is up and going and is recruiting well.
