Utah Pride Festival 2017-Readings for All

SLPS attended the annual Utah Pride Festival put on by the Utah Pride Center. The annual fundraiser run this year from Wednesday, May 31-Sunday, June 4 with the opening of the festival Friday June 2. SLPS has been reading tarot at the festival since 2012 but has been vending at the festival since 2011. This year was as busy as others, with over 150 people getting tarot and palm readings. This year’s festival theme was “Pride Elevated.” Many different vendors attended, as well as food vendors. There was the Gala on May 31, the interfaith service on June 1, with the opening on Friday there was more opportunity for varied entertainment, drag queen story time, panels, and even protesters out at the festival gates. Known as the “official street preachers”, these people see themselves as old bible prophets preaching to a sinful world.

SLPS even sold some of its literary journal! Pride always treats us well, and we are glad to give back to the community.

2nd Annual Ogden Pride Festival-Bigger Than Last Year

SLPS attended the 2nd annual Ogden Pride Festival on Saturday, August 6, 2016 from 2-9pm. Held again at the Ogden City Amphitheater, the festival this year was bigger and longer than 2015’s, going from 2-9, with twenty more vendors according to the planning committee.

The event started at 2pm, after the farmers market which takes place on the street outside the park and ends at 1pm. SLPS had a booth at the end, next to the Imperial Rainbow Court of Northern Utah, Wiscombe Memorial LLC., Miss Ogden Pride (not affiliated with Ogden Pride Inc.), and Fetish Underwear Sales. The vendors who participated were:

SLPS did over twenty readings, mainly tarot, with one or two palm. President Cureton used the Tarot of the Vampyres and April Love used her Hanson-Roberts deck. It was a hot, 95 degrees during the day, only getting hotter as the evening sun passed over at 6, when it died down in traffic. Pepsi was handing out free drinks, two versions of their 1893 formula: one original formula and the other including ginger. A nice man walked around the booths several times handing out free ice cold water.

The amphitheater stage had many different performances and performers, lasting till after 10pm, with:

Utah Pride Festival 2016-A Gay Old Time!

The 41st Annual Utah Pride Festival took place over the weekend of June 3-5, 2016. The Festival opened with prayer at the Utah Pride Interfaith Coalition Interfaith Service on Thursday, June 2 at First Baptist Church. Pride this year included the usual music, vendors, food, rallies, and parade.

SLPS has been participating with a booth at Pride since 2011. The first tarot readings were in 2012, which were free. In 2014, SLPS started charging $5 and uped it to $10 in 2015. This year’s booth was highly successful, bringing in a good income from the society as the annual fundraiser that sets the budget. Over 100 readings were done, many of which were palm readings.

Many companies and organizations participated, including Discover, Netflix, Vegan Leather Boundary, Utah Gay Rodeo Association, the City Library, and the Animal Shelter. Some great and diverse food vendors came including funnel cakes, pizza, Greek, Jamaican, Skewered Thai, Poutine Fries, and Sweet Roasted Corn.

Sunday was the busy day. SLPS marched in the parade with the interfaith in front of the rainbow flag. President Daniel Cureton was asked to bless the flag this year, uttering the following prayer “Father Sky, Firm Earth, let this rainbow shine and open people’s pockets deep and fill her up! So mote it be!” Money thrown into the flag goes to the Utah Pride Center.

Tens of thousands people lined up on 200 S. to watch the parade. The route was reversed this year, with the floats, all 153 entries lining up along 200 W and the Salt Palace and ending at 400 E. A dozen or so protesters were seen, but they were in the minority.

The trees around the city and county building were certainly happy about the festival. President Cureton was walking by an old sycamore when he felt how happy the tree was for the people. “The tree was smiling and looking around, just so happy to be giving its shade to people in the hot sun. It seemed they are lonely there, as its a government building, and they just want to connect with the people around them and provide for them. I think it’s nice then that the area is used for festivals so that the trees feel like they are being useful, giving of their resources like shade and comfort.”

Sunday was the very busy, with the festival squeezed to the brim! The Pride Center reported over 50,000 people attended the festival and 50,000 attended the parade over the weekend!

1st Annual Ogden Pride a Fun Time!

Pride is alive in Ogden, Utah.  Just up the road an hour away is Ogden, a smallish size city, about 80,000 people as of 2015. This year was their first annual pride festival. Held at the Ogden City amphitheater on Saturday, August 1, 2015 from 1-6pm, around 40 vendors, food trucks, and hundreds of people came to celebrate pride in their hometown and listen to some good music. The festival started at 1pm due to competition and shared space with the farmers market that morning. SLPS attended in support of the community, offering $10 tarot and palm readings. With a successful day, SLPS celebrated with rib eye steak at the Cottonwood Country Club.

Utah Pride Festival 2014 A Big Success for SLPS

This past weekend has been a very busy but successful one for SLPS! Things kicked off on Thursday, June 5, 2014 at 7pm with the Utah Pride Interfaith Coalition’s Interfaith service at Wasatch Presbyterian church. SLPS adviser April love read the “Who is Pagan” remark, quoting the Charge of the Star Goddess by Ann Moura and President Daniel Cureton gave a five minute discussion that all people are deserving of unconditional love, all are divine, and that everyone can have a one-on-one with the divine. The Salt Lake Men’s Choir sang and faith leaders from Native American, Pagan, Jewish, Muslim, Sikh, Metaphysical, Tibetan and Zen Buddhist and Christian faiths were present, with the pews full to the brim. Many hearts were full as Moudi Sbeity spoke about the Marriage fight in Utah as it began with him and two other couples who sued the state for equal rights.

Saturday, June 7, 2014 at 2pm was an interfaith rally that joined with the Dyke and Trans rallys and marches down from 200 S and 200 E to the festival at Washington Square at the Salt Lake City and County Building. 3pm brought the start of readings for $5. Lei Loni Tilley and Janelle Baguley join SLPS in full mermaid attire. Lei Loni read the cards at the booth entrance, drawing in all the mermaid/mermen to be! The close of the day came at 9pm when the sun set and SLPS headed off to have a late dinner of Pakistani food at Zaika on State street.

Sunday, June 8, 2014 was the Pride parade at 10am. Lined up at 400 S and 400 E in the back with the interfaith, SLPS marched in robes and pointy hats, with The Mermaids of the Great Salt Lake. President Cureton sported a new custom rainbow outfit made by April Love. The parade finished around 12pm and the readings continued, picking up an even greater pace of people the second day till the festival closed at 7pm.

The festival was very successful for SLPS, making back the booth fee and having enough to spend on a celebratory dinner at the Rio Grande Cafe and give some back to the tarot readers. Here is to next year’s pride!
