The 15th Annual Utah Pride Interfaith Coalition Interfaith Service kicked off 2016 Utah Pride Festival. Held Thursday, June 2, 2016 the service is a great way to open the festivities: with prayer and worship. SLPS has been participating with the interfaith since 2011.

This year’s service was held again at First Baptist Church. This is primarily due to the reorganization that took place earlier in the year. The service included the Salt Lake Men’s Choice, a speaker, a ritual of remembrance, and a chant by the Buddhists. The main speach was given by Cindy Solomon-Kelbba from Wasatch Metropolitan Community Church (MCC). The Pride Pipers recessed at the closing, leading the faith leaders out of the chapel, which included over 15 faith organizations and about 20 leaders from Unitarian, Pagan, Buddhist (Zen and Tibetan), Catholic (one priest traveled from Evantson, WY), Christian, and Mormon’s Building Bridges. A reception with refreshments was held afterwards for the faith leaders to mingle with the audience.

The Utah Pride Interfaith Coalition has a new board of faith leaders who will oversee the function of the annual service. After the 2015 Utah Pride Interfaith Coalition Service Russ Gorringe, who had headed the coalition since 2002, stepped down. A steering committee was formed to reorganize. From the committee meeting on Tuesday, February 23, 2016 at First Baptist Church at 6pm, a new structure was formed to go forward into the future with the coalition.

SLPS trustee Woman Between the Wolves attended the meeting, advocating for the board style leadership, which idea was put forward by SLPS President Muad’Dib at the last interfaith service to Russ and through email to the members before the meeting. The UPIC accepted this proposal and will now be run by a 3 member board, which includes a seat for a non Christian faith. There will be a staggered rotation, with a new seat opening every year of those 3 seats. It will be volunteer roles. The board will still continue to invite all faiths to plan and host the services annually.

SLPS was invited to participate in the Utah Faith Fair, which was a part of the Utah Rally for Love, Equality, Family, and Acceptance. The rally and fair took place on Saturday, November 21, 2015 from 11am to 1pm at the Utah State Capitol building. Organized by Tim VanZeban, the fair was part of the community response to the new policy of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints on children, which states that children of same-sex couples and marriages are not allowed to be baptized unless they disavow their parents.

The fair was successful, with a handful of religious organizations, community groups, and county services occupying the capitol building rotunda from 11-1, while the rally took place on the steps of the capitol. The rally gathered about 100, and it appeared around 150 people resigned their membership using the PostMormon table, who would be delivering the resignations for those that resigned. Others browsed the groups looking at support or getting details on their options being post Mormon. SLPS offered daily advice through a one card pull of the Medieval Cat Tarot, giving positive messages and uplifting confidence to those who had resigned their LDS membership.

The 14th Annual Utah Pride Interfaith Coalition’s Interfaith service kicked off the 2015 Utah Pride Festival. Held at First Baptist Church of Salt Lake City, but hosted by the Community of Christ, it took place Thursday, June 4, 2015 at 7pm. This was the first year that service was not hosted at the host’s facilities. Part of this reason was due to the small space at the Community of Christ, not able to accommodate 300 or more people.

With the singing of the Buddhist singing bowl, the service opened and the faith leaders processed in. Russel Baker-Gorringe informed everyone that he would be retiring from the leadership as head of the coalition. An enthusiastic speech by Troy Williams, executive director of Equality Utah got everyone excited about the recent changes to the state with the recent passage of the anti discrimination bill. Some great music was sun in praise of the divine, a ritual for the honored dead of the LGBT community was performed, and $1200 raised for QSAs (Queer Student Unions) around the state of Utah thanks to a heartfelt and passionate awareness raising talk by Miguel Gallegos who works with local QSA groups in schools. Light refreshments were provided afterwards and guest and faith leaders mingled.
