SLPS celebrated Samhain Saturday, October 29, 2016 at the Temple of the Sun and Moon. The altar was set with Samhain decorations. Pumpkins from the garden gave the right touch of the season, the final harvest, to the altar of life and death.
Veles, the Slavic god of the underworld was invoked as the primary deity. Sitting between spinal column candles, representative of the dead, Veles opened the door and allowed the beloved Kin to visit as the members sang along to “Samhain” from the album Cycle of the Seasons by Lisa Thiel. Bloody Mary’s and maple cookies were offered, in symbol of the body and blood of sacrifice and gratitude.
the feasts included apple pear salad, tri tip steak, and potatoes au gratin.

The plants just keep on giving, but there ain’t no more room! SLPS filled its last buckets and picked its last peppers, as the fall season is here in full swing, so it was time to prepare the garden for winter by pulling out all the plants that wouldn’t survive the snowfall and cold temperatures. A bucket of tomatoes and tomatillos, some squash, a bucket of peppers, a few watermelons, and many pumpkins were harvested in the last harvest in time for Samhain. SLPS has been truly blessed with bountiful produce and few pests in 2016. The 2017 garden will have similar items, but will be scaled back a little bit with fewer pepper and pumpkin plants.

The 6th annual Moab Pride festival took place on Saturday, October 1, 2016 at the Multicultural Center in Moab, UT. SLPS attended the 2015 festival and enjoyed Moab, so we decided to go back to support the community. Breakfast was at the Moab Dinner. This year’s festival was smaller, later in the day, with fewer visitors and participants. The festival still enjoyed large crowds, entertainment, and good food. SLPS did about 20 tarot and palm readings, receiving the blessings of Perun who stood quietly by on his altar. A cemetery set up for day of the dead had names of the Orlando victims, murdered LGBT citizens, and others who have passed on, evoking education about the gay bashings, youth suicide, trans murders, and the shootings in Florida.
Sunday afternoon allowed the SLPS to return to Love Muffin Cafe for breakfast before site seeing. After breakfast, SLPS visited some of the beautiful areas surrounding Moab- The Colorado River and Canyonlands National Park! Canyonlands is full of canyons carved by water and the weather over many eons. Pinyon Pine trees sit in view, shedding their nuts every fall among red rock and millions of years of geology. What magnificent landscapes Utah has in its deserts!

SLPS enjoyed a beautiful Sunday afternoon September 25, 2016 gathering Elder berries in Little Cottonwood Canyon, UT. A friend of the society took us on the afternoon gathering, driving up to a select location along the road among the Aspen forests. Traipsing through the underbrush, the Elder berry bushes were in many spots, rising some 10 feet into the air with the berries dangling before the gatherers. The whiter the berry, the sweeter the juice is how it goes, but always leave some berries for next year if there aren’t any green ones left as the dears also eat the berries.
A trip to the river refreshed everyone. While walking back to the car, President Cureton stumbled upon a Mountain Ash, also known as Rowan, containing bright red berries. What delicious jam all these berries will make!

SLPS celebrated Mabon in Big Cottonwood Canyon Saturday, September 24, 2016, under the shade of an oak and the watchful eyes of the land spirits and ancestors of the mountains. Cernunnos was honored with wine, acorns, lavender sage, and apples. Poetry was read, and the members listened to “Mabon” from the album Cycle of the Seasons by Lisa Thiel. The setting sun created a magical atmosphere in which Cernunnos emerged from the forest to bless those present. Natural oak wands added the right touch to the fall season.
The after Mabon feast was tacos at El Farol restaurant in Midvale. Egyptian tarot readings gave everyone guidance for the dark times ahead.
